THE IABSE COLLOQUIUM ON CONCRETE MODEL CODE FOR ASIA organized by the Thailand Group of IABSE 17-18 March 1999, Phuket, Thailand

Prof Ekasit Limsuwan, Vice Chairman of the International Committee on Concrete Model Code (ICCMC) at that time spearheaded the organization of this Colloquium with the support from the Thailand Group of IABSE, the Engineering Institute of Thailand (EIT) and the Japan Concrete Institute (JCI).		The aim was to share information and experiences gathered by participants relating to their own national building codes, summarize the problems from each country and explore methods for the effective implementation of the Asian Concrete Model Code (2nd Draft) published in March 1999.

PROGRAM The Colloquium was held from Wednesday 17 to Thursday 18 March, followed by a meeting of ICCMC on Friday 19 March at the Phuket Arcadia Hotel, located about 1 hour away from the Phuket International Airport. OPEN MEETING An open meeting of the ICCMC was held on the second day. Prior to the meeting a questionnaire on the Draft Code was distributed to all participants.	PLENARY SESSIONS Five lectures were presented at the Plenary session: Concrete model code for Asia - the needs, development and details by T. Uomoto, University of Tokyo, Japan The ACI 318 code process by J.M. Hanson, North Carolina State University at Raleigh, USA The development of an international codification for structural concrete with the CEF-FIP model codes by M. Virlogeux, Engineering & Design Consultant, France Concrete model code for Asia - concept to national implementation by E. Limsuwan, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand Concrete model code for Asia - editorial philosophy and promotional strategy by Y.C. Loo, Griffith University, Australia

INVITED LECTURES Three invited lectures were delivered during the technical sessions: Concrete model code for Asia - design by T. Ueda, Hokkaido University, Japan Concrete model code for Asia - report of the working group on materials and construction by S. Tangtermsirikul, Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology, Thailand Concrete model code for Asia - Maintenance by S. Misra, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India
